Make decisions while they’re still easy to change.

A book can look finished on screen and still need work before production. Page layout, image quality, file setup, paper and binding all affect how the printed object reads and feels.

A review gives you time to ask questions and understand those choices before committing to print. Catching a file issue or reconsidering a material early can help avoid rework, production delays and unnecessary expense. The advice is specific to your project; savings and outcomes depend on what the review finds.

What can we look at?

Bring a work in progress or a file you think is ready to print. Ryan can help you examine:

  • Page layout, typography, sequence and the presentation of text and images.
  • Document dimensions, margins, bleed, image resolution and PDF preparation.
  • Paper, binding and finishing choices that affect the design.
  • Production questions and the next steps toward a clearer, more considered print project.

The session is useful for self-publishers, first-time authors, artists and anyone navigating design or prepress for the first time. Experienced teams can also bring a specific question that needs another set of eyes.

The discussion can extend beyond books to other print media and graphic design. Send a short description of your project and the questions you want to resolve before the call.

01 / SHARE

Send material ahead.

Share your document, reference links and proposed materials by email or link before the appointment, using the contact details supplied with your booking. Include your main questions so Ryan can review the material ahead of the call.

02 / REVIEW

Work through it together.

Use the hour to inspect files, discuss design and production choices, and ask questions by video. Where practical within the session, Ryan can demonstrate or make minor adjustments while explaining the reasoning.

03 / PLAN

Know what to do next.

Discuss which changes matter most and what needs further work. If the project calls for a fuller design service, use the conversation to clarify the scope and next steps with Ryan.

Thirty years of design experience.

Ryan Thompson works independently through Leaven Agency and collaborates with BookArt on design and publishing enquiries. He brings 30 years of graphic design experience, with an ongoing practice in design software, book design and print preparation.

The consultation connects design decisions with the practical questions of making a printed piece: how it will be read, how it will be produced and where a change now may prevent a problem later.

A few practical questions

Do I need a finished design?

No. A draft, sample pages or a set of references can be a useful starting point. Tell Ryan what stage you are at and what you want to decide.

Is a full redesign included?

The appointment is a 60-minute consultation focused on review, questions, file inspection and minor adjustments where practical. Larger design or production work needs its own discussion of scope.

Where do I book and pay?
